Prompt Firewall¶
AccuKnox Prompt Firewall is a real-time inline security layer that sits between your users and your LLM. Every prompt and every response passes through the firewall, where it is inspected against your configured policies before being allowed through. Unsafe content is blocked, sanitized, or flagged, and every interaction is logged for audit and compliance.

How It Works¶
The Prompt Firewall operates as a transparent proxy with three core components:
- Traffic Controller (Proxy) - The entry point that holds the connection. Users never talk directly to the LLM. All traffic routes through AccuKnox first.
- Policy Governance Engine - Evaluates every prompt and response against your configured policies (e.g., "No PII", "No Jailbreaks", "No Code"). Customizable per application.
- Audit Log - Every request and response is recorded for compliance, investigation, and forensic analysis.
The firewall enforces policies in both directions:
- Input inspection - Scans the user's prompt before it reaches the LLM
- Output validation - Scans the LLM's response before it reaches the user
If content violates a policy, the firewall can block the request entirely, sanitize the content (e.g., mask PII), or monitor and log it without blocking.
What the Firewall Filters¶
Prompt Policies (Input Controls)¶
Prompt policies inspect what users send to the LLM. These prevent malicious, abusive, or out-of-scope inputs from ever reaching your model.
Response Policies (Output Controls)¶
Response policies inspect what the LLM sends back. These prevent unsafe, non-compliant, or sensitive content from reaching end users.

Session Linking
Always pass the session_id from scan_prompt into scan_response. This links the prompt and response as a single interaction in the audit trail. Without it, they appear as separate unlinked findings.

Setting Up the Firewall¶
Step 1: Add Your Application¶
Navigate to AI/ML > Applications > Add Application. Enter a name and tags for your AI application.
Pre-requisite
You must onboard your application with the Prompt Firewall Proxy before configuring policies. See the App Onboarding Guide for detailed steps.
Step 2: Configure Policies¶
Policies can be applied at two levels:

To add a local policy:
- Click Create Local Policy
- Select a policy template (e.g., "Detect Secret Keys in Prompt")
- Customize the detection logic and action (Block, Monitor, or Allow)
- Assign to your application


Step 3: Monitor the Dashboard¶
The AI-Security Dashboard provides real-time visibility into:
- Total Queries processed through the firewall
- Policy Violations detected and blocked
- Active Policies currently enforcing

Step 4: Investigate Violations¶
Click on any violation count to see the full breakdown by policy. Each violation shows which policy was triggered, whether it was blocked or monitored, and the severity.

Step 5: Audit and Trace¶
Every interaction is recorded in the audit trail. Click any query to see:
- The full conversation (user prompt and AI response)
- Policy scores for both prompt and response
- Whether the interaction was blocked, monitored, or passed
- The exact policy and threshold that triggered


Real-World Example: Blocking a Prompt Injection + Code Execution¶
A user sends a message containing C++ code along with an injection attempt:
- Scan - The firewall checks the prompt against all active policies
- Detect - Two policies trigger: BanCode (code detected) and Prompt Injection (injection pattern detected)
- Block - The prompt is blocked before reaching the LLM
- Log - The dashboard records the policy name, type, action, and status
Result: The unauthorized code execution and injection attempt are both blocked. The user receives a safe denial message. The security team can review the full audit trail.

Both work together: Red teaming finds the gaps, and the Prompt Firewall enforces the rules to close them.
